For The Christian Addicted to Porn

For the Christian addicted to porn, it seems that there is no way out—that it’s a hopeless situation. There’s the constant temptation, the desire to stop, the unending allure, the hiding, the shame and the total sense of powerlessness that form the excruciating cycle of the porn addict’s life. Does it always have to be like this?

The Christian will often know and believe that God is powerful enough to conquer any sin and that Christ gives us the ability to overcome any temptation, but it often doesn’t feel that way. Despite prayers, accountability and the promise to never do it again, the addict keeps going back. God is there, but his plans for our recovery may involve more than a spontaneous healing.

Barriers to Getting Help

Pornography addicted Christians are often reluctant to get the help they need because of the shame and stigma attached to pornography use among the greater Christian community. The situation can be especially complicated if the individual holds a position of leadership within the church. Though he or she may want to get help, there is a genuine fear of negative repercussions. What would happen to a pastor if his or her porn addiction were discovered?

This is a legitimate concern. No one wants to be known for their porn addiction, especially those who are supposed to be leading God’s people in spiritual growth. The addict may also fear the response of family and friends. Spouses, upon finding out about a porn addiction, often report the same level of betrayal as if the porn addict had actually committed adultery. Admitting one has a problem and dealing with the consequences is never convenient. But neither is the life-controlling effect of an addiction. The addict finds him or herself between a rock and a hard place.

The Self-Sufficient Attempt

Many will try to secretly get help on the side, or they will make a personal vow to never look at porn again. But this often isn’t sufficient. While it may take the individual away from the fix for a few days, weeks or months, it doesn’t deal with the “why.” People become addicts for a reason. Often they are looking to fill a void—perhaps the result of a childhood trauma, mental illness, a spiritual issue or dysfunctional relationships. Perhaps they struggle with fear of intimacy, same sex attraction or overwhelming loneliness. Removing the porn doesn’t deal with the root causes of porn addiction and so the problem returns.

But then comes the point of desperation—when there is no longer any room for worrying about out image or our pride, when we no longer have the luxury of trying to uphold a good front. When we reach this point of utter desperation, we have no choice but to come clean and get the help we need.

Christian Recovery for Porn Addiction

The good news is: there is hope. Pornography rehab is a focused season of healing and recovery that not only provides a break from pornography use, it also allows the addict to begin digging into the root causes of addiction while also working on his or her relationship with God. The recovering addict will learn to study the Bible and to apply Bible verses for addiction recovery to his or her life and situation. Through Christian counseling, prayer and a strong support system of other recovering Christian addicts, the struggling porn addict can begin to get the help that he or she needs to live free and clear of the bondage of porn addiction.
