Indian Health Service (IHS) is the federal health program for American Indians and Alaska Natives. Established in 1955, Indian Health Service provides public health services and medical health services to federally recognized Alaska Native people and Native American tribes. Indian Health services include behavioral health, dental, medical, pharmacy, physical rehabilitation, optometry, pediatrics and immunization benefits. Indian Health services may be provided directly by Indian Health Service employees or referred to outside providers.

In an effort to bring the prevalence of alcohol and drug abuse by Alaska Native and American Indians at or below that of the general U.S. population, Indian Health Service created the Alcohol Substance Abuse Program (ASAP). Like medical and dental care, drug and alcohol abuse treatment might be provided by an Indian Health services facility or outsourced to other facilities under the Indian Health Service Purchased/Referred Care (PRC) program.
