Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback, or neurotherapy, is an EEG biofeedback system that helps participants learn to self-regulate their central nervous system and brain functioning. It has proven effective in treating individuals suffering from a number of issues including depression, anxiety, ADHD and PTSD. In neurofeedback, electrodes are attached to a person’s scalp and the brain’s frequencies are monitored and analyzed. A video game based on the desired change in brain functioning is generated. While hooked up to the biofeedback system, clients play the video game and are rewarded when the brain produces the desired frequencies (by doing well in the game). After a number of sessions, clients can learn to change their own state of mind; for example, generating fewer low arousal brain frequencies (depression) or high arousal brain frequencies (anxiety).

*At The Ranch in Tennessee, neurofeedback is offered with a provider in Nashville, when clinically indicated.

Neurofeedback is a type biofeedback that has been the subject of research for decades. It teaches people how to consciously control brain functions through the measurement of brain waves provided through a feedback signal. Each type of brainwave frequency is associated with different cognitive functions and mood states.

Neurofeedback is a pain-free, safe intervention that can help people with neural dysregulation learn to retrain their brains and recover optimal neural functioning. During neurofeedback, electroencephalograph (EEG) sensors are placed on the scalp. Brain activity is measured from moment to moment through electrical patterns on the surface of the scalp. These components are extracted and communicated back to the client using various forms of auditory or visual signals.

How Does Neurofeedback Help?

Utilizing real-time displays of brain activity can help people learn to self-regulate brain functions. After a period of time, individuals are able to detect when desired and undesired brainwaves are being produced. Gradually, they learn how to consciously maximize the production of desired brainwaves and minimize the production of undesired brainwaves associated with different moods and situations. This training can help reduce anxiety and strengthen mind-body synchronization.

Benefits of Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback improves the brain’s ability to self-regulate, maintain flexibility and shift smoothly between states of relaxation and arousal. It helps bring erratic brainwave patterns associated with addictions and mental health disorders back into balance, thereby resulting in more efficient cognitive functioning and mood regulation. Benefits include:

  • Enhanced memory and focus
  • Improved executive functioning
  • Decreased impulsivity and anxiety
  • Reduced depressive symptoms
  • Reduced drug cravings
  • Better mental clarity
  • Deeper, more restful sleep
  • Improved mood
