What Is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar a mood disorder affecting the brain, causing shifts in mood, activity, and energy levels that may impact an individual’s ability to carry out everyday tasks. One characteristic feature of bipolar disorder is a pattern of alternating manic or hypomanic and depressive episodes lasting various lengths of time. Depending on which form of bipolar disorder you or your loved one has, it has significant potential to impact your life negatively. Some conditions of bipolar disorder can be debilitating, especially during depressive episodes. Manic episodes can include symptoms such as:

  • Feeling energized, elated, or high
  • Experiencing increased activity levels
  • Talking extremely fast
  • Having rapid thoughts
  • Feeling agitated, irritable, or touchy
  • Having difficulty sleeping
  • Participating in risky behaviors

Symptoms of a depressive episode can include:

  • Feeling sad, down, or empty
  • Experiencing decreased activity levels
  • Having difficulty sleeping
  • Having very little energy
  • Experiencing difficulty concentrating
  • Thinking about death or suicide

The severity of these episodes determines the form of bipolar. The four types of bipolar are:

  • Bipolar I – Manic episodes last at least seven days, and depressive episodes last at least two weeks. Mixed episodes, or the presence of both mania and depression, are possible.
  • Bipolar II – A mix of manic and depressive episodes that are not as severe as those of Bipolar I Disorder.
  • Cyclothymic disorder – A series of manic and depressive episodes over at least two years, but not as severe as those experienced with bipolar I or II.
  • Other specified and nonspecified disorders – Symptoms of manic and depressive episodes that don’t fit the above categories.

Remedies for bipolar in a professional treatment setting can reduce symptoms and improve life satisfaction.

Is There a Cure for Bipolar Disorder?

There is no known bipolar disorder cure, but people can manage symptoms with a combination of psychiatric medication and psychotherapy. Treatment for bipolar disorder may include a variety of interventions, including:

  • Psychotherapy
  • Medication management
  • Lifestyle changes

Additionally, evidence-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients process their emotions, gain insight into the causes of their symptoms, and develop strategies for managing their condition. Medication management is also a key treatment component and may include antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics.

Adopting healthy lifestyle habits is essential to effective bipolar disorder treatment. These may include:

  • Regular exercise
  • Eating nutritious meals
  • Getting plenty of sleep
  • Limiting stressors
  • Maintaining social connections

Though there is no cure for bipolar disorder, treatment can help individuals manage their symptoms and live more fulfilling lives.
