Statistics on Teen Substance Abuse

Getting up-to-date statistics is difficult when it comes to statistics on teen substance abuse. Reporting is a problem, there is no way to gauge how honest the teens reporting is. The threat of problems with family and school is significant. Though the surveys are confidential to encourage honesty, they may not be completely truthful.

This survey along with emergency room reporting data and other research gives us a good idea of where teenagers are with their drug use. This information can assist you in opening discussions regarding drug and alcohol use.

Start Talking Early

This should not be the first or last discussion that you have with your child. Substance-abuse prevention begins with children in elementary school. We don’t want to wait until they start using substances. The time to discuss substance use with your child is before they have tried substances. The biggest indicator of whether your teen will abuse drugs is if you have abused drugs.

If you struggle with substance abuse currently or in the past, you can set a good example of how to stop addiction. Regularly participate in addiction treatment programs. Depending on your current relationship with drugs or alcohol, take advantage of the following:

The Numbers of Statistics on Teen Substance Abuse

Every four years, the National Institute on Drug Abuse conducts a Monitoring The Future Survey: High School and Youth Trends. This research helps inform the distribution of drug addiction funds as well as how programs are formulated to meet the needs of teenagers. The survey includes 42,500 students from almost 400 public and private schools across America. The most disturbing part of the research rendered from the survey is that there is a continued significant increase in vaping. These statistics on teen substance abuse are hard to believe with all the negative vaping effects in the news.

Marijuana

The 2019 findings report that 8th, 10th, and 12th graders continue to use marijuana. 6.6% of 8th graders, 18.4% of 10th graders, 22.3% of 12th graders admitted using marijuana in the past month. These students also reported (1.3% of 8th graders 4.8% of the 10th graders, and 6.4% of 12th graders) daily use of marijuana. Daily use is equal to using marijuana on 20 occasions in the past 30 days.

Marijuana abuse doesn’t need to jeopardize your child’s future. Utilize marijuana addiction treatment programs early on to prevent continued abuse.

Alcohol

Alcohol statistics on teen substance abuse appears to be declining from last survey’s findings. 7.9% of 8th graders, 18.4% of 10th graders, and 29.3% of 12th graders reported alcohol use in the past month. There is a marked decline since the last survey in 2014: a decrease of 23.5% for 10th graders and 37.4% for 12th graders. This news is encouraging.

Opioids

Opioid use was on the decline as well. 2.7% reported using opioids in 2019. Over the last four years, there is a steady decline reported for opioid use. The opioids surveyed did not include heroin. Only prescription opioids were surveyed.
