What Are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders are a type of mental illness that manifests through a person’s relationship with food. Sufferers may develop harmful patterns of thought, belief and behavior around food and eating. Specific types of eating disorders include:

Anorexia Nervosa

Our anorexia treatment program helps people who have developed a severely distorted body image. Believing themselves to be overweight, anorexia leads to dangerously restricted food intake. Sufferers may continue to think of themselves as overweight even as they drop below a healthy weight.

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia involves episodes of binge eating and purging. The person may consume several thousand calories in a single sitting and immediately purge the food. A bulimia nervosa treatment program helps them better understand how to achieve a healthy relationship with food.

Binge Eating Disorder

Our binge eating disorder treatment program helps people whose unhealthy relationship with food leads to regular episodes of binging. This may involve eating to the point of severe discomfort or pain. They may then fast or restrict food at other times to “make up” for the binging.

Compulsive Overeating

Compulsive overeaters regularly eat past the point of fullness at mealtimes. They often snack between meals, even if not hungry. The Ranch’s other specified food and eating disorder treatment programs can assist people who struggle with overeating and any other eating disorder.

Why Is Eating Disorder Treatment Necessary?

Eating disorders are serious illnesses. They have a strong impact on a person’s life and on their physical and mental health. Anorexia and bulimia can be fatal due to long-term calorie restriction and purging.

Even though eating disorders center around food, there are often complex underlying issues driving the behavior. Psychotherapy allows clients to explore the root of the problem.

Some people with eating disorders abuse drugs to speed up weight loss or cope with emotional pain. Drugs may include anything from diet pills or laxatives to illicit drugs such as amphetamines or cocaine. We offer a medically supervised detox program to help people detox in safety and comfort.

Residential Eating Disorder Treatment

The residential program at The Ranch helps clients address their eating disorder by treating the whole person. Support is also provided for people who need treatment for co-occurring mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Out treatment center offers:

Therapy

As part of the eating disorder program at The Ranch, you’ll work on recovery in one-on-one therapy sessions, as well as in group sessions and activities. Here you’ll explore your relationship with food and the issues underlying your eating disorder.

Meal-Time Support

At the same time, you’ll work on developing new, healthier habits around food and eating. This includes meal planning and preparation support and after-meal processing groups. Here you will work on transforming the experience of eating into one of nourishment and community.

Relapse Prevention

As part of your treatment program, you’ll face down the foods that trigger your disordered eating. You’ll practice challenging situations such as grocery shopping and restaurant eating. Our team also teaches healthy coping skills for when life gets stressful.

Outpatient Treatment

In less complex cases, some patients benefit from a non-residential treatment option. If a residential eating disorder treatment program isn’t right for you, an outpatient program might be more suitable.

Attend sessions at The Ranch several days a week. This allows you to get the treatment you need, with less disruption to your work and home life.

Treatment for Co-Occurring Disorders

Many people with eating disorders also experience other mental health problems. For instance, around 50% of people with eating disorders have anxiety or depression problems as well. And, nearly 1 in 10 people with bulimia or binge eating disorder abuse alcohol or drugs. These issues need to be addressed in treatment to give clients the best chance of success.

The Ranch offers treatment for these co-occurring disorders so that clients can address the full range of problems they’re facing. This ensures they get the treatment and support they need to progress in recovery.
